In many ways LOF is a morality tale. A fable is intended to provide moral instruction and its characters and scenes reflect this. Golding's story is really a social experiment designed to illustrate the inherent darkness of humanity. The island is a microcosm of the general world. The social dynamic of the boys can be traced in some way to the dynamic that exists in playgrounds even today.
