how is, in lord of the flies, connected to war?

We are never told what happened to get the kids evacuated. It is hinted but never stated that war has happened. An engine fire on their airplane is mentioned. We can reasonably speculate that it was shot down. I think Golding meant the violence and disintegration on the island to represent the outside world.
