Ralph takes his leadership responses seriously. He pushes on regardless of how bad things get. He tries to appeal to Jack's humanity but, by the end of the novel, there is none left. Unfortunately Ralph's conflict with Jack creates instant tension and this tension is relieved by going after Piggy.
