Each boy is symbolic of some part of the society they came from. Piggy represents knowledge, Ralph represents responsible leadership, and Jack represents chaos and power, while Simon is Golding's Christ-figure. Golding keeps each boy within the boundaries of what they represent. The other boys naturally tend to gravitate towards the darkness and control of Jack.
