Why is the process of bathing a "ceremony" and a "liturgy"? Why do characters in novels often bathe? What does this imply about Mama Elena?

The process of bathing is a ceremony because Mama Elena treats the process as if she were a Queen. Every moment of the bathing process is a ritual, all done to her specifications. In my opinion, the ritual makes her feel powerful.
