Tamenund asks what tongue he speaks. Uncas states it is the language of the Delaware. The old chief speaks angrily of the young Mohican for entering the camp by stealth; he believes that Uncas is a false Delaware. Uncas incites much anger as he tells the assembly that they are dogs who whine when the Frenchmen offer the "offals of deer."
