Last of the Mohicans

In the first scene between Cora (female lead) and Duncan (young British soldier) in which she declines his marriage proposal, what two views of matrimony (old and new) are being presented?

Duncan is old-school, chosen to protect the girls. He proposes as a matter of honor and truly loves Alice. This is a time of arranged marriages. Cora, on the other hand represents, the suprisingly madern woman of out time who wants to make her own choices regardless of what others have planned.

THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH!!!!
