I think we are to expect Louise to crumble into a ball and sob when Josephine brings her the news. We do not expect Louise's new sense of freedom. This becomes especially acute in light of the fact that the marriage wasn't a "bad" one. Louise simply likes the feeling of freedom, she feels like she belongs to herself again. The media even today is not ready for a girl like Louise. At the time she would be portrayed as heartless and selfish, her heart attack a sort of "just deserts" for her selfish pining. THe idea of a woman as an individual is lost in the romanticized union of marriage. I hope this comes close to what you were asking.
