I believe that Joseph's letter is significant because it illustrates his innocence. At this point, Joseph is still unaware of Lady Booby's amorous intent.... he sees her actions as anything but what they really are. Because of this, the reader discerns not only how innocent Joseph is, but also how he extends his own morality to others.... he never even thought twice.
