It was a piece of luck for Mrs. Halls, that she had a visitor at such a wintry night who was not a haggler. She wanted to show herself worthy of her good fortune, so she cooked for the guest herself and even asked him if she could dry his hat and coat to which she got a negative answer. She even tried to make a conversation with the stranger that were ill-timed. She showed him his room, which was kept warm for him, and made sure he was served on time and his needs were looked after.
