This quote is significant because the narrator has finally come to understand his purpose in life. He isn't meant to be invisible or insignificant, he was meant to bring an awareness to both himself and the others people overlooked. To see men and women on the streets and realize they were no different than those he knew in the South was a revelation. His purpose has been revealed; help others to make something of themselves..... something that can be remembered.
