What does Krakauer reveal in chapter 10 about his role as a writer that goes well beyond what Outside magazine had hired him to do?

What is it that he explains?

As Krakauer hiked from camp to camp it was evident that he was taking on the role of more than a writer for Outside Magazine. He became an integral part of many teams in their push to summit the mountain. He helped people in distress like Kruse who could barely dress himself.
