Reinhold Messner was a legendary climber who had summited Everest without oxygen twice. This changed the viewpoint of elite climbers as to what can be done on Everest. Climbers who were not elite or ones that simply had bad luck paid the price for thinking they could push the boundaries like Reinhold did.
