It is important that Saul understands his roots at Gods Lake because the lake symbolizes the value of personal heritage and family. When Saul decides to make a pilgrimage to Gods Lake as an adult, he has a vision of his family and ancestors. This vision provides him with a new sense of strength in spite of all of the persecution he has faced and allows him to persevere in spite of his personal traumas.
