    Linda and Dr. Flint’s “competition in cunning” involves several meta-literary elements. Identify a few examples. How do these moments advance the storytelling?

    Your students might point to the fact that Linda writes falsified letters, which highlights her role as author within the world of the novel. They might also point to the incidences of Linda’s eavesdropping (for example on pages 144-145). When Linda overhears conversations, she serves as a stand-in for the reader, thus allowing the reader to feel more intimately connected to the story.
