    How would you characterize this book's genre? In light of this classification, what distinctions would you draw between Harriet and Linda?

    As a slave narrative, this book is more akin to an autobiography or a memoir. However, because the author employs a pseudonym, the book also retains some novelistic qualities. As a result, Linda is effectively "the main character," whereas Harriet Jacobs is the "author," despite the fact the women are effectively one in the same. Jacobs functions as the architect of the story, while Linda is its subject.
