What happens to Marguerite and Bailey because of Marguerite's decision to stop talking?

Maya decides to stop talking to everyone but Bailey, and for a while this is accepted as being part of the trauma. When she refuses to speak after a few months, she is punished for being Œuppity'; then, she and Bailey are sent back to Stamps.
