The "aristocrat" of black Stamps, Mrs. Flowers is a gracious woman who encourages Maya's love of literature, and also helps Maya to break out of her muteness. Maya regards her as the pinnacle of humankind. Mrs. Flowers refuses to let Maya feel sorry for herself. She treats Maya with respects but also teaches her discipline and how to be more self-aware.

Unlike everyone else, Mrs. Flower helps Maya but also disciplines her. Mrs. Flower does not let Maya feel sorry for herself, doing this makes Maya trust Mrs. Flower very much. Maya listened and trusted Mrs. Flower because she treats her like how she would any other kid. "“I’ll accept no excuse if you return a book to me that has been badly handled.” My imagination boggled at the punishment I would deserve if in fact I did abuse a book of Mrs. Flowers'. Death would be too kind and brief."

Mrs. Flowers was able to help Marguerite when others could not because she understood Marguerite's needs, took a personal interest in her education and well-being, and created a supportive environment for her to feel comfortable and open up.
