The Taliban destroyed beautiful Buddhist temples and statues. Police were killed and moderate Islamists were threatened. Malala and her family were terrified. It was well known that her father was a moderate progressive Islamic man. They would be obvious targets for the Taliban. The school was risky to keep open and their student body dropped out of fear families of kids attending the school would be targeted.
