What is the significance of Esperanzas'a poem?

Esperanza's aunt listened to everything she read to her. When Esperanza read her a poem she'd written herself, her aunt encouraged her to keep writing, that writing would keep her free. Esperanza agreed, although she didn't yet know what her aunt meant by freedom.
