How One Can Find A Sense Of Belonging As Told by ‘The House on Mango Street’ 8th Grade

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros explores the themes of belonging and acceptance in a series of vignettes. Esperanza is a Mexican American girl growing up in Chicago, on Mango Street. She grapples with major life events and tries to find herself while also documenting the lives of the other people on her street. She finds herself struggling to find a sense of belonging and the book explores her journey over time to how she becomes a member of the community and finally feels like she belongs. In both the book and reality many people feel like they don’t have anywhere where they belong and they feel like outsiders wherever they go. This is something many people go through but don’t know how to actually find a sense of belonging. Although some may claim that to find a sense of belonging you need to change yourself, but in order to find a true sense of belonging you need to be proud of yourself and where you came from.

Some people claim that in order to belong, you need to change yourself first. In the House on Mango Street, many of the people who lived on Mango Street, especially the women, believed this. They gave up huge aspects of their lives and personalities for their men and in order to ‘fit in’ to the community....
