Henry V (Film) Background

Many critics argue that Kenneth Branagh’s 1989 film adaption of William Shakespeare’s “Henry V” is one of the greatest cinematic recreations of Shakespearean literature ever. The film, which was shot primarily on intricate theatrical sets with a budget of approximately $9 million, was released in October 1989. Branagh both directed the film and acted its lead role. Though “Henry V” was the first film Branagh had ever directed, he received an Oscar nomination for Best Director as well as one for Best Actor. The film garnered over $10 million at the box office and has been revered for its historical accuracy and emotional impact. In “Henry V” Branagh managed to breath new life into a story which has been told countless times. His film, much like the original play itself, will likely stand the test of time.
