What do the character's decisions and actions say about human nature and how we respond to our environment?

For an HoD Socratic Seminar, we were asked the question stated in the title, "What do the character's decisions and actions say about human nature and how we respond to our environment?". We are required to cite strong textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, determining where the text leaves matters uncertain. I need a bit of help to explain characters explicit decisions and actions.
