The dying natives are ragged shells of humanity cast aside in their own filth. The Chief accountant is impeccably dressed in white and well fed. He is a symbol of colonial superiority at the expense of indigenous people. It's as if he sucked the souls out of the natives and is able to use their misery to appear the perfect European colonizer.
