Guns, Germs, and Steel

Why were Europeans able to replace the aboriginal Australians but not the natives of New Guinea?

My questions are pertaining to the book Guns, Germs, and Steel.

One reason was the Malaria problem. This disease was a huge problem for European settlers. They simply could not travel through Malaria infested places to reach the highlands. The Europeans also had a difficult time building a functioning infrastructure because of the inhospitable terrain and climate.
