The rivalry between Florence and Gabriel was caused by their mother's obvious preference for her son. Gabriel was her favorite because he was a boy. He received all of his mother's attention, the best food, and the best clothing. Florence, however, was treated as a servant in her own home. As a result, Gabriel was spoiled and selfish, whereas, Florence became bitter and filled with hate. Whether or not their relationship is repairable is doubtful.
