He longs for all the knowledge that will come when he enters the "country of eternal light."  He has many questions about the North Pole which have plagues him most of his life.  He hopes to visit a place where his foot goes before that of any other man.  And his feeling of loneliness probably comes from being with men who do not share his vision and who do not hope for what he hopes his future will hold.  They are there simply for the work.
