Molly was known as a half-caste meaning she was half aboriginal and half white. The policy of the Australian government at the time was to find half-caste children, especially girls, and put them in government residential schools. These schools were designed to strip these children of their aboriginal identity. There was a more sinister reason as well. The Australian government eventually wanted the "breed" the indigenous traits out of half-caste kids.
