Since their departure, Philadelphia has become a hotbed of illness. Mattie and her grandfather see dead bodies in the streets, people flee when they hear the approaching wagon, and many of the city's homes and shops sit abandoned. dead bodies cast into the road, abandoned shops and homes, and frightened fugitives who flee when the hear the wagon's approach. Trenches are seen in the cemetery, which are used for mass graves.
