In this section of the novel, Troy's father catches him with a young woman, he thinks his father is angry because he hasn't finished his chores, but he quickly learns that his father wants the girl for himself. Troy became a man when he stood up for himself and the girl.... when he turned the tables on his father, picked up the reins his father used to beat him, and used them to beat his father.
