In Chapter 16, we learn that Jeanne, her father, and her mother, stay in Manzanar because they're afraid of going back to their home on the West Coast. Most of Jeanne's brothers and sisters move to the East Coast.

In December of 1945, the war is officially over and Manzanar is closing. The family has no choice but to leave. Unfortunately, they are scheduled to leave, and Papa finds out he no longer qualifies for a fishing liscense..... more problems.

In Chapter 18, we find Woody serving in Tokyo. He meets the family, learns who has survived, and finds only onw member of their family died as a resuly of Hiroshima. Woody also finds out that the stories he doubted about his past are all true..... with his doubts erased, he finds a new respect for his father.... he is proud of him.
