Montag reassesses his life after Clarisse asks him the simple question, "Are you happy?" I think Montag looks for freedom which indirectly brings him joy. He looks for the freedom to read books and think: he looks for the freedom to distance himself from the spirit-crushing society that people are expected to be a part of.
