What is the stereotype of an Engineer? How is the Narrator/engineer atypical?

Stereotypes of an engineer, Ethan representing one, is largely an emotional introvert. He keeps to himself and has problems with intense social interaction. Ethan would read "Popular Mechanics" as entertainment. He is precise and rational when it came to mechanics but rather inept when it came to asserting his personality.
