I guess suicide is a pretty harsh punishment. I think this makes sense within the context of the struggle. The struggle between Dr. Jekyll and his alter ego Mr. Hyde. The story is interesting in retrospect. We watch as Hyde struggles with his secret. He attempts to distance himself from Hyde but his excuses become futile. Hyde's attempts to avoid his transformation fail. Hyde's dark side is taking over. Suicide seems rather fitting and aptly ironic.
