Death of a Salesman

Why is the product that willy sells never really mentioned or identified in the play? What is the importance of selling?

The product has no importance..... the job is what is important. A salesman "sells", whether it be door to door, traveling, in a department store, or at a car dealership. Many salesmen work on commission, meaning there is no pay if the sale isn't made. Selling is making a living..... providing for the family. If the sales aren't there, neither is the money. Willy is struggling because the thing he was really good at..... talking to people, is being replaced by other methods. He seems to be unable to transition, thus, he is no longer and integral part of the big picture. His type of salesmanship has become obsolete.
