Death of a Salesman

Read the staging directions at the beginning of act 1.

Based on the description of the set, what conclusion should the viewer be able to draw about the loman family?

From the staging directions, we can conclude that the Lowmans live in the city, in an area predominantly occupied by apartment buildings. Their home is solitary and gloomy, as it is surrounded on all sides by higher units. Because the Lowmans have their own home, we can surmise that the family might be considered middle class. The trophy in the bedroom gives us a hint that someone in the house is (or was) athletic. The second bedroom signals the presence of children (ages unknown).
