For what reasons would the gold miners strike, and what do the whites fear will happen if they do?

THe miners want basic rights and fair pay. The whites, the ones who own the mind, are afraid the mine will shut down. They don't want to increase their costs. Also there is always the threat of violence with a strike of this sort in South Africa. Check out chapter 26.
