What is Raskolnikov's statement to Nikodim Fomitch on leaving the Marmeladov's and why is it "ironic"?

Raskolinikov tells Nikodim that Marmeladov is dead and asks him not to bother the family. It's ironic because Mameladov wasn't dead at this point in the story.
