The end of the story is significant because the reader comes to understand the couple has reached an impasse, even if they don't yet realize it themselves. Communication has already broken down, and the couple has not come to a conclusion to their problem. In the end, we know that even if they remain together for the immediate future.... this moment is the beginning of the end.
