Citizenfour Background

Citizenfour was released in 2014. It is a documentary directed by Laura Poitras and produced by Mathilde Bonnefoy, Laura Poitras and executive produced by Steven Soderbergh. The film focuses on Poitrais's interaction with Edward Snowden in interviews in Hong Kong, who called himself Citizenfour in encrypted emails he sent to her offering her information about illegal wiretapping in the United States by the National Security Agency (NSA).

The film was made for a budget of $1,000,000 and returned three times that at the box office. The film went on to win Best Documentary, Feature at the Academy Awards, as well as a BAFTA Award for Best Documentary, and a Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary.

Praxis Films was the production company in association with Participant Media and HBO Documentary Films for the documentary feature while CAT&Docs was the main sales representative (among two others), and RADiUS-TWC was the main distributor (among multiple others).
