The author’s notes for Chinese Cinderella clearly suggest some form of division between girls and boys - it is stated that even though many Chinese parents “still prefer boys”, nowadays girls are “not so much despised”. It also gives us an idea of superstition in China and the everlasting effects it can have ; Adeline was despised all of her life, all because she “made” her mother die.
