Mercedes in The Call of the Wild, is weak, unlikable and selfish. Is London necessarily suggesting that women had no place in the Klondike

I think London was referring to Mercedes in particular. I'm not sure what London thought of women in the Klondike. Most of his stories are populated by men. Mercedes might seem like a stereotype of women at the time but there isn't textual evidence to say he felt this way about all women.
