According to Jack London, why were the ancient memories sharper to Buck than memories of his more recent past in California? What ancient memories do you think the halfbreed cook evoked in Buck as he crouched near the fire?

Buck is discovering is inner alpha-dog. He feels the keen sense of his doggy wildness ingrained in him from generations of evolution. Sitting by the fire and watching the half-breed , Buck senses his own roots that are sharper than his pampered unnatural life with the judge.
