Why is there enormous public interest in seeing John, but not in seeing his mother, Linda?

John is considered an exotic and primal specimen of a man. People are captivated by his rugged looks and abundant sexuality. His mother on the other hand is old and withered. She does not interest the general population. Linda is encouraged to disappear and go on a permanent soma (drug induced) holiday.
