In chapter 11 how does Bernard feel that the Savage won't come to meet the guests?

Bernard needs Savage (John). As his guardian Bernard, for the first tie in his life, feels important. Now, his guests are not interested in Bernard in the least. People feel it necessary to put on niceties with Bernard to get access to John. When Savage refuses to come out John experiences anxiety. His only validation to exist is refusing to come out and "entertain".
