Slavery would turn a culture of hard working decent people into something soulless and twisted. The general Southern white population, although not all, would regard negros as sub-human animals. Many white slave-masters would regard it their duty to turn blacks into human beings or as far as human a negro could be. The book describes the horrid effects of this both on the slaves and those that oppress them. Many people argue that the difficulties blacks face in America today are directly linked with the eternal struggle of their American heritage. Basically pick a horror story from the book (Paul D forced to wear a bit, Sethe humiliated while pregnant and beaten) and one can understand how slavery robs everybody of the basic fundamentals of humanity.
