This play suggests that many people hide their dreams or squash them because they have to go on with living. They cannot realize those dreams without hurting someone. The best example, of course, is Tom and indeed Tom's father, both of whom have to desert their families to do what they want rather than what they have to. They find that their dreams, however, keep them tied somehow to their families that they have left behind. They can never fully realize their dreams.
