Three Times of Marvelous

The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?


“YES SIR.”

This ritual can be recognized by any Dojo Karate student. It symbolizes the respect that one has for themselves and others, demonstrating discipline and self-control. Although my journey through karate started off as a means of learning self-defense, it turned into my life.

At first glance, a karate student is nothing but a fighter, but that isn’t all. Karate is discipline, learning to overcome all obstacles and adapt to any situation. A karate student knows the value of sweat and perseverance; they have the self-control necessary to achieve anything. In order to earn my black belt, I, like any other student, had to take and pass my black belt test. This is a four-hour physical, mental, and emotional crucible to see if one deserves that black belt. On average, it takes two attempts to pass this test. It took me three. It was the biggest embarrassment that I have ever faced. I grew up being great at everything. If I wasn’t amazing, I would work hard until I was. This resulted in many sleepless nights, but at the end of the day, I would make it. For the first time in my life, I didn’t succeed --neither with my talent nor with my hard work.
