Why doesn't Thomas get along with Trip and the other Negroes in his tent at first?

I looked at this scene again. Thomas has an idealized view of what a free black man is. He speaks proper or white man's English which sets him apart from day one. The others find Thomas a sell out or a Negro pretending to be white. They call him "snow flake".
