This can be found in bits throughout the narration. He compares his people to forest people, he says his people are "not ignorant like the Forest People" because they spin and sew their own clothes as well as read. He says priests can read the ancient texts while nobody among the forest people can. He belittles the forest people for eating "grubs from the trees." Through his comparisons we learn a little, despite his bias, about John's people.
